USMNT give themselves breathing room with much-needed El Salvador win

Scorer: Robinson 52′

The United States earned an all-important three points on Thursday as they overpowered El Salvador 1-0 using one of their strongest XIs to date.

Antonee Robinson’s 52nd-minute goal separated the two sides as the United States temporarily move into first place in Concacaf qualifying, with Canada involved with Honduras at the time of writing.

The match also featured the oft-injured Jordan Morris participating in a World Cup qualifier for the first time in four-and-a-half years as he came on as a second-half substitute.

El Salvador’s latest defeat sees them remain on just six points, which will likely see them miss the World Cup for the 10th straight time.

Mexico use late barrage to defeat 10-man Jamaica

Scorers: Johnson 50′; Martín 81′, Vega 83′

Mexico used a late pair of goals to survive a major World Cup qualifying scare to defeat 10-man Jamaica 2-1 on Thursday night.

A two-minute surge from Henry Martín and Alexis Vega allowed El Tri to keep pace in Concacaf qualifying as defeat could have seen Mexico drop out of the top-three automatic qualifying places.

After Damion Lowe was sent off just before half-time, Jamaica found themselves fighting an uphill battle but found an unlikely goal through Daniel Johnson to put Jamaica temporarily back in the qualifying hunt.

However, it would be El Tri coming up big when it mattered to go temporarily in second place on 17 points, with a huge Costa Rica-Panama clash later tonight.

With the defeat, Jamaica remain on seven points are now longshots to catch up and get themselves in the race for Qatar.
