Update On Liverpool’s Pursuit Of This Bundesliga Midfielder: What Should Be Klopp’s Play Here?

In a recent tweet, Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol provided an update on Liverpool‘s pursuit of Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara during this summer transfer period. Solhekol claimed that the £30m-rated Spanish playmaker is eager to embark upon a new adventure and would love to work with Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. It is understood that the Reds have no plans to make a move for him as they have no immediate need to strengthen their midfield department, but if the situation changes, then the Bayern star could be an option for them to consider this summer.

Thiago’s Excellent Season For Bayern So Far

Thiago has established himself as one of the top performers at the Allianz Arena during this campaign as he has been responsible for producing some commanding displays at the centre of Hans-Dieter Flick’s midfield. The 29-year-old has often been deployed as a holding midfielder which has reflected on his stats after he registered three goals and two assists in 37 appearances for the German champions this term across all competitions.

The 37-time Spanish international has contributed at both ends of the field as evident from his average of 2.2 tackles, 2.0 interceptions, 0.7 shots, 1.0 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per game in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League. He is a tidy distributor of the ball from midfield and has completed 90.5% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).

Thiago has played an instrumental role behind his team’s dominant run in the Champions League this season. He is expected to be an important member of the Bayern first-team when they face off against Barcelona on Friday night. If the Spaniard can help the Bavarian giants secure the win, then they will be just two victories away from being crowned the new champions of Europe which will be an incredible achievement for the club amidst the dire circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 crisis.

What Does The Spanish Midfield Ace Offer On The Pitch?

Thiago is an excellent dribbler as he possesses outstanding ball-control, agility and composure to cause a lot of headaches for the opposition. He is a technically-gifted footballer and has done well to transform himself into a tough-tackling midfielder as well. The Spanish talent is usually quick to sense the danger which allows him to pull off some vital interceptions in midfield. He is a class act at both ends of the field, so Liverpool will do well to lure him away from Bavaria in this off-season.

What Should Be Jurgen Klopp’s Play Here?

At the moment, Klopp does not need to bolster his midfield ranks as the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum have all proven themselves as regular first-team starters at Merseyside. Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner have also done well to provide cover for them last season.

Unless the Reds are willing to cash in on one of their midfielders, it doesn’t make sense for them to consider a move for Thiago this summer. The Premier League champions will be better off concentrating on strengthening some of the other areas of their squad following the arrival of their first summer signing, Konstantinos Tsimikas from Olympiacos earlier this month.
