In a recent print edition, Record offered an update on Everton‘s pursuit of Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes. It is believed that the Toffees have held talks with the player but will know about whether they can land the Brazilian sensation after they appoint a new manager (transcripted and translated by Sport Witness).

Nunes’ Impressive Season In Portuguese Football

Nunes enjoyed a brilliant campaign with the Portuguese giants as he managed to help them win the Liga NOS title recently. The Brazilian midfield ace participated in 39 matches for his current employers last season, netting three goals and providing three assists in multiple competitions.

The 22-year-old has impressed in patches but needs to be more consistent on the field based on his average of 0.6 tackles, 0.5 shots and 1.2 dribbles per game in the Portuguese top-flight. However, he was tidy with his ball distribution after making 84.5% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).

Nunes has shown plenty of promising signs during his time at José Alvalade Stadium, so he could be a decent acquisition for Everton if they can figure out a way to bring him to Merseyside during this summer transfer window.

Will Nunes Be A Good Signing For The Toffees This Summer?

Nunes can make some energetic runs with the ball towards the opponent’s penalty box and hardly gives away the ball at the centre of the park. He has done well to get himself involved in six goals for Sporting last season. However, the Brazilian talent needs to work on improving his productivity in the final third if he intends to become a world-class box-to-box midfielder someday. He is also proficient at disrupting the opposition’s flow in the game by making some crunching tackles in midfield.

Someone of Nunes’ work ethic will be a decent addition to the Toffees squad as he will add some much-needed depth to their midfield department. We can expect him to offer some serious competition for Allan, Tom Davies, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Gylfi Sigurdsson for a regular starting place at Goodison Park.

At 22, there is still a lot of room for improvement in Nunes’ game, so Everton should only consider recruiting him if they plan to ease him into their squad. However, the Brazilian midfielder is yet to prove himself at the highest level, so he might struggle to cope with the physical nature and high intensity of English football. Even then, Nunes will be a decent signing for the Toffees during this summer transfer period as he will enhance the quality of their first team considerably ahead of the new season.
