After a successful season last year, Bolton Wanderers are looking to build upon the foundations in place with the hope of making it into the play-offs and competing for promotion next season.

Left-back Declan John was a core part of the Wanderers side last season as he made 44 appearances in all competitions and scored five goals in that time as well as providing seven assists.

Therefore, the fact there was interest in the 27-year-old this summer may come as no surprise. However, it’s been rumoured that the interest in the player is from Wrexham who sit in the National League under the management of former Bolton boss Phil Parkinson.

The money being pumped into the Welsh team is no secret and after failing to gain promotion to the EFL via the play-offs last season, the money will only be increased in the hope of going up this time.

It wouldn’t be the first time Wrexham have spent highly having attracted Elliott Lee from the Championship as well as Jordan Tunnicliffe and Mark Howard from the league too this summer.

Rumours suggested that a bid of £500,000 had been made for the 27-year-old who currently has two years remaining on his deal with the Whites.

However Marc Iles, reporter for The Bolton News, has reported that no bid has come in from Wrexham as of yet.

With the summer transfer window still open for some time, there’s still time for the Welsh side to make a move but as it stands, Bolton will be hoping to hang on to their player.

True False

The Verdict:

This would be a massive signing for the National League side and given the fees that would likely be involved for all parties if this was to happen, you can understand why it would be considered.

However, it’s worth remembering that John was part of the Sunderland squad when Parkinson was manager at the Stadium of Light after joining on loan, yet he failed to make an appearance under the manager and previously stated he was never given a good reason why.

If a bid from Wrexham was to come in, Bolton fans would be hopeful that their defender would choose football over money and given he is a core part of the side and the squad are pushing for promotion next year, you do feel as though a move that far down would be damaging to his career.
