Bolton Wanderers are set to sign Barbados winger Thierry Gale from Rapid Wien.
Bolton Wanderers are set to sign Barbados international winger Thierry Gale from Austrian side Rapid Vienna, according to reports on Friday.
The winger is the most expensive Barbadian footballer in history, following his move to Rapid in 2023 for a fee of BSD $1.7m (approx £600,000). He joined the Austrian outfit on a four-year deal, but has made just six appearances for the senior team in two years.
Gale was sent out on loan to Polish side Piast Gliwice until December 2025, with the loan club covering his wages in full. However, his parent club terminated the loan deal early, and didn't acknowledge his return.
Now, as per Alan Nixon via his Patreon page, the Barbadian is now set to swap the Austrian capital for Bolton, after a deal was agreed and a medical passed earlier in the week.
The 23-year-old is now set to link up with Steven Schumacher's side, who are hoping to be fighting towards the top of League One next season.
After years honing his skills in Hungary and Georgia, Gale finally got his dream move to a big European club in 2023, signing for Rapid Vienna on a four-year contract.
However, that move hasn't gone as hoped for the 23-year-old, who has been limited to just six senior appearances for the club, and was recalled early from his loan spell at Piast Gliwice.
This led to speculation regarding his future, and now Nixon has confirmed that Gale will be leaving Vienna permanently to join up with League One outfit Bolton, after the two clubs agreed a deal and the player passed his medical earlier in the week.
The Barbadian international, who has scored eight times for his national team in 16 appearances, is said to be keen to try his luck in English football, and will now join up with an ambitious side and an excellent head coach who will undoubtedly be towards the sharp end of the division next term.
We've seen plenty of clubs in League One look across Europe in the transfer window, such as Peterborough United, Plymouth Argyle and Wycombe Wanderers, who've all signed players from overseas this summer.
The Trotters are now the latest club who look set to add themselves to this list, as new sporting director Fergal Harkin looks to be making the most of all the contacts and knowledge he gained from his stint at Standard Liege.
Although relatively unproven over the last couple of years, Gale did prove to be a reliable source of goals during his time at Georgian club FC Dila Gori, where he scored 12 goals in 35 appearances, which earned him his move in 2023.
After a difficult few years where match minutes have been hard to come by for the wide-man, he will hope to come in and hit the ground running at Bolton, rekindling the form he showed back in 2022.
