Gorrin, who has spent the majority of the campaign injured, suffering an anterior cruciate ligament back in November, proved to be a consistent starter at the beginning of the campaign.

The Spaniard has featured over 100 times for the U’s since his 2019 summer transfer from Motherwell, predominantly operating in a holding midfield role during that time.

Oxford have also offered Billy Bodin a new deal, with the experienced attacker netting six goals and providing four assists in 14 league games after the turn of the year.

Making it a hat-trick, young striker Slasi Spasov has been handed a short-term contract.

The verdict

Gorrin has proven to be a high-level performer for the U’s over the years, consistently starring in a holding role when he has been available for selection.

With his recent progress hindered by injury, the interest that is still present acts as a further indication of the kind of talent he possesses.

Unable to determine when he will be back fit, the U’s will be hoping that a new contract can be signed and that he could be back training ahead of the new campaign.

It remains to be seen if any other clubs join the race for the classy midfielder, and whether Sunderland’s interest hinges on whether or not they achieve promotion.
