Luton Town have agreed a permanent deal for Barnsley goalkeeper Jack Walton, according to an update from Football Insider.

The report states that Luton’s number two Harry Isted will head the other way but on a loan deal until the end of the campaign.

Walton, 24, has spent much of his Barnsley career as a second-choice but has always provided a strong level of competition to the number one shirt at Oakwell.

With Luton’s current number one Ethan Horvath on loan from Nottingham Forest and James Shea returning from a long absence through injury, the Hatters have made the move to bolster their goalkeeping department with the future in mind.

True False

The Hatters were thrown into a difficult situation last season after Shea’s injury, having to use the emergency loan market on two separate occasions.

The verdict

It is not the most exciting deal in the world but it is a move that makes complete sense from a Luton perspective, especially with it appearing that Isted will be out of contract in the summer.

Walton is someone who will be able to challenge Horvath to a starting spot, whilst he is still just 24 years of age and could have a bright Kenilworth Road future ahead of him.

As for Isted, he did well to pave his way back above Matt Macey in the Luton pecking order and a League One opportunity could lead to a little more game time, although Brad Collins is fixed in as the number one at Oakwell.

Walton has a high ceiling attached to him whilst he has managed to gain experience in the Championship before, adding to why this would be an intelligent transfer.
