Incoming Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé has this week been torn to shreds by a former French international.

As much comes owing to Mbappé’s efforts en route to Les Bleus being sent packing from the European Championships.

France, of course, saw the country’s Euros campaign brought to an end at the hands of Spain on Tuesday night.

Out-fought, out-thought and frankly out-played, Didier Deschamps’ troops could have few qualms post-match, with Spain having marched on to the tournament finale as deserved winners.

The aforementioned Mbappé was responsible for creating France’s only goal of the clash, courtesy of a pinpoint cross for Randal Kolo Muani.

But the 25-year-old, all told, endured another underwhelming evening, to cap off a disappointing tournament in Germany.

And not at all shy in making his frustrations with Mbappé clear as a result, was former Les Bleus midfielder Emmanuel Petit.

Speaking during an appearance on ‘Rothen s’enflamme’, on RMC Sport (as cited by Diario Sport), one-time Barcelona man Petit slammed his country’s captain, labelling him ‘unworthy’ of the armband:

“For me, he’s not a good captain after the signals he sent out after taking office, almost forced. His statements to his teammates, for example, when he said that he wasn’t getting good balls, or that Griezmann wasn’t having a good Euro… Is it the captain’s role to point out his teammates’ mistakes?

“And then, excuse me, all the fuss about the mask after he broke his nose. Who cares! He’s not the first player to play with a broken nose, he won’t be the last. He demanded a lot to have this armband, and for me he had no leadership either on or off the field. At no time did I see him harangue his teammates.

“When you play one game out of two with PSG in the last six months, you have a lot of time to prepare physically, but I remember his statements before the Euros, where he said that I care more about my mental strength than my physical strength. He was failing, physically he was failing and in his role as captain he was also failing. For me he was an unworthy captain.”
