Arsenal may have lost 3-1 on Sunday but two players did impress head coach Unai Emery.
Speaking to the media after the game, the Spaniard admitted Arsenal were inferior to the reigning Premier League champions.
He was, though, pleased with his two central midfielders.
“I’m very happy with Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira’s performances today,” Emery told reporters.
“But they also need time to improve and to take confidence, to take experience for their futures here.
“With the result, it’s not easy to say that, but there are some positives that we can look at from our players today.”
Guendouzi in particular enjoyed an impressive first half, attempting more passes than any other Arsenal player and not misplacing a single one of them.
The 19-year-old has been a surprisingly frequent starter this season after joining from Ligue 2 side Lorient in the summer.
It may have been a poor result at the Etihad Stadium but there were flickers of hope for Arsenal fans, with their midfield pairing offering a platform for future success.
