Ugalde rescues Costa Rica victory against Suriname

SAN DIEGO – The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup continued as Costa Rica earned a 4-3 win against Suriname in Group A on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.
Alonso Martínez opened the scoring in the 14’, placing Costa Rica in front with a right footed touch inside the box to meet a cross from Brandon Aguilera.
Manfred Ugalde converted a penalty opportunity in the 19’ to extend the lead for Los Ticos with a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner.
Gyrano Kerk cut the deficit for Suriname in the 34’ with a header from the left side of the six-yard box, connecting with a cross from Richonell Margaret.
Margaret equalized in the 59’ with a left-footed finish in front of goal. Kerk supplied the assist after winning the ball to start the breakaway.
Shaquille Pinas converted on a penalty chance in the 64’ to place Suriname in the lead.
Josimar Alcócer put Costa Rica back on level terms in the 76’ with a right-footed shot on a rebound inside the penalty area.
Keylor Navas had multiple saves in stoppage time to deny Suriname the lead and a potential match-winning goal.
Ugalde converted a penalty attempt in the 90+13’ to collect his brace and take the full three points for Los Ticos.
Costa Rica will continue its campaign against the Dominican Republic when Group A resumes on Wednesday in Arlington, Texas. Suriname will meet Mexico later in the night as part of the Gold Cup doubleheader.
