Over the years, Barcelona have claimed several young talents to be the crown jewel of the current crop of La Masia talents. None, however, have had the impact that Lamine Yamal has had.

Now just 17 years of age, the youngster has already established himself as a mainstay for both club and country.

Boxing legend praises Yamal

Earlier this week, world-famous former UFC Champion Conor McGregor spoke to the media (h/t Mundo Deportivo) about the recently concluded European Championships and how he rooted for Spain through thick and thin.

“I loved the European Championship. I supported Spain. Unbelievable. It’s as if they toyed with their rivals. When a team marked them, and they said, wait, and then boom. Two goals in two minutes.”

“Seven out of seven. It was absolutely incredible. I supported them and they won. I bet 83,000 euros before the tournament. The bet was 11 to 1. More than a million,” he added on Luis de La Fuente’s side.

Notably, the UFC legend had special words for Barcelona’s talented winger Lamine Yamal who lit up the tournament in Germany and walked away with the Young Player of the Tournament award.

“The young boy, the 16-year-old, I think he is in the hands of God. They smashed everyone and won.”

Much-needed rest

After playing 50 games for Barcelona last season, Yamal immediately headed to train with Luis de la Fuente’s side for the Euros.

The teenager began the tournament as a regular starter for La Roja and played a crucial part in the team’s run to the elusive trophy.

After a hectic year, Yamal is now enjoying a much-needed break from football before the new season begins.

Notably, Barcelona have rested him for the upcoming pre-season tour to the United States to prioritize his fitness and well-being.
