Barcelona hosted Bayern Munich in a big UEFA Champions League clash at the Camp Nou on Matchday 1. Bayern Munich won the game 3-0 with a first half goal from Muller and two second half goals from Lewandowski. Bayern Munich are one of the favorites to win the UCL this season, and had a great start against Barcelona.

Ronald Koeman started the Barcelona side in a 3-5-2 formation. Luuk De Jong started as a striker alongside Memphis Depay. Pedri and Frenkie De Jong were the central midfielders with Busquets as the holding midfielder. Jordi Alba played left wing-back and Sergi Roberto played at right wing-back. Marc-Andre ter Stegen started in goal behind the three centre backs Eric Garcia, Gerard Pique and Ronald Araujo.

The average positions of the Barcelona players show that the kept their shape in the game. It was a new shape and they had to defend for a lot of the game, and did not have many advanced positions. Bayern Munich were lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation by Julian Nagelsmann. Manuel Neuer started in goal behind a back four of left back Alphonso Davies, centre backs Niklas Sule and Dayot Upamecano and right back Benjamin Pavard. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Gortezka were the defensive midfielders behind three attackers Leroy Sane, Thomas Muller and Jamie Musiala. Robert Lewandowski led the line for them.The average positions of the Bayern players showed that they were in much more attacking positions as a team at Camp Nou. They had many attacks and scored three goals in the game.Bayern Munich had a very high xG of 3.45 in the match and scored three goals as well to show for it. They took 17 shots in the game, with eight on target. Barcelona had a low xG of 0.26 in the game with just five shots on goal, and for the first time in UCL history, they had a match without a shot on target. Robert Lewandowski had the most xG in the game with 1.45 and took three shots in the game. Musiala made the most dribbles, while Kimmich had the most passes into the final third with 14.Barcelona’s shot map shows the five shots that they took were from outside the penalty area. They had a low xG in the game, and did not have many opportunities in the match.Bayern Munich’s shot maps show that they took many shots in match with a few from outside the box and rest from inside the box. They scored two goals from close range and one from distance, comfortably winning the game 3-0.The xT time line shows that Barcelona had a good start to the game creating decent threat early on. But once the German side had settled down, it was them who created most of the threat throughout the game. Jordi Alba made the most passes into the opposition box, as they ad a few smart passes and crosses.The passing zones of Bayern Munich show that they had a huge number of passes in the midfield and a lot in attack and defense as well. Lewandowski, Kimmich and Goretzka all had four passes into the opposition box.Barcelona’s xT creation zones show that they did not create much xT in the attacking positions. They had a little threat from the left-wing, with Jordi Alba having the highest xT creation alongside Memphis Depay.

Jordi Alba and Memphis Depay had the highest xT from passes. Depay also had the highest xT creation from successful dribbles.

The xT creation zones of Bayern Munich show that they created a lot of expected threat all over the field, especially in the center of the pitch near the opposition box. Joshua Kimmich had the highest xT from passing.

Barcelona ahd to face a lot of defensive duels in defense and midfield. Eric Garcia won three defensive duels, while Ronald Araujo won four.Barcelona had to face only a few aerial duels in the match. Jordi Alba won both of his aerial duels in the match.Barcelona made a few loose ball recoveries up front in attack. Luuk De Jong made three loose ball recoveries, which was the highest for Barcelona in the game.

Bayern Munich had to face a lot of defensive duels  in midfield and in attack, and they won a decent amount. Upamecano won the most defensive duels in the game with six.

There were not many aerial duels to contest as the game was mostly played with passes along the ground. Both Upamecano and Pavard won two aerial duels each for the visitors.

Bayern Munich mad a few loose ball recoveries in defense and midfield. Upamecano also made the most loose ball recoveries with four, followed by Goretzka’s three.

Bayern Munich will be happy to start the campaign with three points. It was a disappointing performance from Barcelona as they will look to make a come back in the remaining games of the group stage.
