Barcelona suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of Bayern Munich in the gameweek 1 of the UEFA Champions League 2021/22 season. The German champions dominated the match and came on top in the clash of the two giant teams in Group-E.

Ronald Koeman’s side changed their previous match formation of 4-4-2 and lined up in a 3-5-2 formation with new signings Garcia, Depay and Luuk de Jong making their Champions League debuts for the club. Sergi Roberto and Alba were the two wing-backs with Pique being the most senior defender and player in the team.

Barcelona were playing deeper in the match. The position of the two strikers is very deep and have dropped a lot towards midfield. Later on, the left-sided centre back Eric Garcia was substituted, and it looks like Barca played with four at the back during the end of the match.

18-year-old Jamal Musiala started the Champions League opener for the German champions. Upamecano made his UCL debut for the club, and the team lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Lewandowski was supported by Muller, Sane and Musiala in attack. Musiala was replaced by Gnabry on the right side and Coman replaced Sane on the left. Coman played in a more advanced position on the left.

Bayern team dominated the match when we look at their stats in the above viz. The team had an XG of 3.45 and created a lot of positional attacks in the match. The possession count was almost equal for both teams in the match.

Barcelona players were unable to trouble Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer in the match. Bayern striker Lewandowski had a very high XG rate and even attempted three shots in the match. His teammates were also excellent in passing the ball into the opposition final third and in recovering the balls in the opposition box.

Barcelona players only attempted one shot from inside the box. Their XG is low due to no shots on target in the match.

Bayern players found their way into the opposition box multiple times. Two goals were scored from outside the 6-yard box and one goal was scored from a long-range. Bayern player even hit the post two times in the match.

The XG timeline is the timeline of shots attempted by both teams. Bayern looked more threatening in the second half with 11 attempts in total. Barcelona players were unable to take any shot in the last 15-minutes of the match.

Jordi Alba attempted 67 passes in total before getting substituted in the 74th minute. He and Garcia passed the ball 19 times amongst each other. Both these players were the recipient of the most number of passes.

Upamecano was the Bayern player who attempted the highest number of passes followed by Joshua Kimmich. Both these players received equal passes in the match.

Barcelona new star player Memphis Depay attempted four smart passes along with two crosses in the match. Jordi Alba attempted seven crosses from the left side. Most of the crosses attempted by the team were from the left side.

The crosses attempted were mostly from the right side. Bayern midfielders Kimmich and Goretzka attempted some passes into the opposition box from the middle of the park. Gnabry also tried to pass into the box after coming in as a substitute.

Barcelona creative zones were on the left and the players who created some threat with passing were Alba and Depay, who were playing on that particular side. Defender Eric Garcia had a 100% accuracy rate.

Memphis also showed some of his skills at the front and his expected threat from dribbles is high as compared to his teammates.

Bayern players creative zones were in the middle of the park. The team didn’t focus on going wide on left and played much wider on right. Joshua Kimmich was a constant supplier of the ball from midfield.

Youngster Musiala created some threats with his dribbling abilities. Kingsley Coman also created some threat with dribbles after coming on as a sub.

Barcelona players were unable to win most of their defensive duels. The left-sided players only won five of the 22 duels contested.

Aerial duels were contested less in number and Jordi Alba’s win rate was 100%.

The loose balls duels win rate was less in defence and more in the opposition half. Luuk de Jong contested five duels in total.

Bayern’s new centre back Upamecano was strong at the back and the young defender more than 80% of his duels.

Bayern defenders only contested three aerial duels at the back and won two of them.

The loose balls duels were mostly contested at back or in the midfield. Almost every Bayern player won at least one duel.
