Leicester held to goalless draw by PSV

Scorers: N/A

Leicester were held to a goalless draw at home to PSV as both teams struggled to fashion goalscoring opportunities on the night.

Kasper Schmeichel was called into action early on with a stunning save to stop the hosts from going behind. Mario Götze just about beat the Foxes’ offside trap but his close-range attempt was expertly stopped by the onrushing Danish goalkeeper.

Although PSV looked dangerous on the break Leicester grew into the match. They were close to breaking the deadlock when Harvey Barnes and Kelechi Iheanacho combined on the edge of the area before Barnes rifled a shot that was only kept out by the corner of the bar and post.

Iheanacho himself came close and PSV had a penalty call waved away in the second half but neither goalkeeper was particularly threatened as the game ended 0-0.

Bodø/Glimt come from behind to beat Roma

Scorers: Pellegrini 43′; Wembangomo 55′, Vetlesen 89′

Roma travelled to Norway keen to make up for the thrashing they suffered at the hands of Bodø/Glimt in the group stage.

A tight first half was brought to life when Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s clever flick released Lorenzo Pellegrini. Despite the tight angle the Roma captain dispatched a fierce strike into the roof of the net the give the visitors the lead.

The Norwegian side were given a lifeline early into the second half when defender Brice Wembangomo scored his first goal for the club. The 25-year-old’s curling effort from the edge of the area was deflected and Rui Patricio couldn’t adjust in time, helplessly knocking the ball into his own net.

The hosts had the better of the second period and deservedly found a winner in the 89th minute. Hugo Vetlesen met Amahl Pellegrino’s free-kick with an empathic header which, via a deflection, completed the comeback and gave the Norwegians the advantage heading into the second leg.

Marseille set new club record in win over PAOK

Scorers: Gerson 13′, Payet 45′; El Kaddouri 48′

Marseille set a new club record of six consecutive European wins with a first-leg victory over PAOK courtesy of a Dimitri Payet masterclass.

Their night got off to a perfect start when Payet played a sumptuous through-ball to Gerson who, unmarked, had drifted into a pocket of space in the box. The Brazilian’s left-footed volley left Alexandros Paschalakis rooted to the spot and gave OM the lead.

Payet then got his name on the score sheet in exquisite fashion, scoring straight from Cengiz Ünder’s corner. The 35-year-old, standing 30 yards from goal chanced his luck with a half-volley that flew into the top corner to double the hosts’ advantage.

Looking to change their fortunes PAOK brought on Omar El Kaddouri at halftime. The Moroccan wasted no time making an impact, halving the deficit with a perfectly placed finish from Andrija Živković’s backheel.

The game descended into an end-to-end encounter and Gerson was sent off in the 94th minute, but Marseille held on for the victory and set a new club record.

Last-minute back heel keeps Feyenoord and Slavia level

Scorers: Sinisterra 10′, Senesi 74′, Kökçü 86′; Olayinka 41′, Sor 68′, Troaré 90+5′

In the day’s earlier game Feyenoord and Slavia played out an enthralling 3-3 draw as Ibrahim Traoré’s 95th minute back heel keeps this tie finely balanced.

The hosts took the lead in the 10th minute when Luis Sinisterra finished off a swift counter-attack. Slavia then turned the game around, slightly against the run of play.

Peter Olayinka drew them level before half-time with a scrappy goal that had more than a hint of offside before Yira Sor, who had just missed a glorious opportunity, poked home from close range at the hour mark.

The twist and turns weren’t done as two goals in twelve minutes for Feyenoord looked to have sealed the win but with the last kick of the match, Traoré’s back heel levelled the two sides once again.
