The German has been subject to a lot of interest over the summer for a switch, while his relationship with owner Dejphon Chansiri has become very strained.

Rohl has been particularly open to the media about his desire to depart the Yorkshire-based club, recently saying in an interview with the German newspaper Bild that he wanted to return to the Bundesliga “as soon as possible", while also being previously touted for the Middlesbrough job and the vacancy at Leicester City.

Ongoing issues with the club regarding unpaid wages, a lengthy transfer embargo and relationship with Chansiri have led to Rohl becoming disgruntled, and the latest development has emerged about his future as the build-up to the 2025-26 campaign continues.

According to a report in the Mail Online, current Sheffield Wednesday chief Danny Rohl has told senior players he will leave the club after nearly two years at the helm.

Rohl has not returned for pre-season training and has reportedly confirmed his exit to some of the more key figures in the squad.

This heats up links over a switch to Leicester City after the Foxes recently parted company with Ruud van Nistelrooy. The report details that the Midlands outfit have held talks with Wednesday over a compensation package for the 36-year-old.

The compensation figure is expected to be significant due to his contract not running down until 2027, with Rohl detailing he’d done his best with the club during his short stay when questioned by players about why he hadn’t organised anything for the upcoming term.

The Mail Online also details that Sheffield Wednesday are set to turn to assistant manager Henrik Pedersen, although he is a target for Brentford, with Keith Andrews keen to have him on his coaching staff in the Premier League.

Sheffield Wednesday need to resolve Danny Rohl saga to move forward

It’s been known for a while about Danny Rohl’s desire to leave Sheffield Wednesday, but it’s been rather surprising that he hasn’t been able to take on another role so early into the summer.

Rohl has done an incredible job with the Owls since arriving for his first-ever spell in English football, keeping the club in the Championship in his first term and then securing a 12th-placed finish despite some public spats with Dejphon Chansiri.

Such a job deserves an upgraded move, and it now seems to appear that Leicester City will be his next destination, although they themselves have their own issues with PSR that could lead to an imminent points deduction.

From Sheffield Wednesday’s perspective, clarity is vitally important. In order to be able to move forward and try to prepare for next season, they need a boss in the hotseat that is totally committed to the fight and will give their all to try and get the Owls to succeed in very testing times.

There’s too much uncertainty at the moment, and Wednesday need to create an environment where everyone connected with the club is on the same page. Without that, pre-season plans will be severely disrupted, which could lead to the Owls having a dismal start to the new season.

Because of this, Wednesday must allow Rohl to depart and bring in a new manager very quickly in order to have the best possible preparation for 2025-26.
