Shakhtar started in a 4-4-1-1 formation with Fernando leading the attack for the hosts. Shakhtar made two changes at halftime and used up their remaining three changes in the last 15 minutes of the game.

Real Madrid started in a 4-3-3 formation with a front three of Benzema, Rodrygo and Vinicius.

Real Madrid made five changes in the second half to give some rest to their players for the weekend’s game.

Real Madrid completely dominated the game as they scored five past Shakhtar. Madrid had a higher xG as they had more shots on goal and also dominated possession of the ball. Shakhtar had a high PPDA of 18.7 which indicates they did not press the Real Madrid players high and allowed them to have time on the ball.

The Real Madrid players dominated most of the attacking metrics as seen in the above visual. Vinicius scored two goals and had the highest xG of any other player.

Shakhtar only attempted six shots on goal but had three shots on target. The low number of shots explain why they had a low xG.

Real Madrid attempted a total of 23 shots on goal and had 10 of these shots on target. They attempted 11 shots from inside the penalty area.

Karim Benzema attempted the most number of shots and also had four shots on target. He scored one goal and had a high xG of 0.65. The xG timeline indicates that Shakhtar only managed their first shot on goal in the second half.

Shakhtar completed 492 passes in the whole game and managed to pass around the ball in the own half. Marlon attempted the most passes for Shakhtar.

Toni Kroos controlled the tempo of the game like he usually does as he received the most passes from his teammates and also attempted the most number of passes.

Shakhtar completed more passes in the central part of the pitch. They attempted four smart passes and also attempted nine crosses into the penalty area.

Real Madrid attempted 13 crosses in the game with Lucas Vazquez attempting the most number of crosses for them. He also played three passes into the opposition six-yard box.

Most of the Shakhtar players had a high xT from the passes they attempted and had more xT creation zones on the left flank.

Manor Solomon was playing from the left side and had a high xT from the dribbles he attempted. But he failed to make the right passes when he got into great positions.

The midfield duo of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric had the highest xT from the passes they attempted. They also had a very high passing accuracy rate. Many of the Real Madrid attackers managed to generate a high threat from the passes they attempted. Vinicius had the highest xT from his dribbles.

Ismaily attempted a total of nine defensive duels and only lost two of these duels.

Shakhtar won eight out of the 17 aerial duels they attempted.

Ismaily had a 100% success rate in winning loose ball duels as he won all three duels he attempted.

Real Madrid won most of the defensive duels they attempted and recovered possession of the ball. Karim Benzema attempted five aerial duels and won three of these five duels. He was a constant threat to the opposition defence in the penalty area.

Real Madrid won 41.9% of the 31 loose ball duels they attempted.

Victory means Real Madrid are now second in Group D, level on six points with leaders FC Sheriff, who lost 3-1 at home to Inter Milan.
