UEFA have announced that Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb has been postponed after an AEK fan was killed in violent clashes between the two sets of supporters on Monday night.

The 29-year-old man died after being stabbed in Athens, with a total of 98 arrests being made following a series of violent incidents outside the Agia Sophia Stadium.

UEFA has branded the murder a “terrible act” and confirmed that Tuesday’s match has been postponed, with discussions taking place with the two clubs regarding a rearranged date, which is likely to be Friday 18 August 2023 on Saturday 19 August 2023, with away supporters banned from both legs of the tie.

A statement from European football’s governing body read: “UEFA deplores in the strongest possible terms the appalling incidents that took place in Athens last night and resulted in the loss of a life.

“While expressing our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim, to AEK Athens FC and its fans, we would like to reiterate that violence has no place in our sport and we expect that those responsible for this terrible act be arrested and consigned to justice in the shortest delay.”

The two sides are still expected to meet in Zagreb on Tuesday 15 August 2023.
