Former basketball player Laurent Sciarra has been suspended by TV Monaco for a pro-OGC Nice chant made during a broadcast of an AS Monaco Basket game on Tuesday night.
Sciarra is a consultant for TV Monaco and was on commentary as the Principality club’s basketball team hosted Zalgiris Kaunas at the Salle Gaston Medecin. During TV Monaco’s live broadcast of the EuroLeague fixture, AS Monaco manager Adi Hütter appeared on the screen with the Austrian in the stands on the night.
As he did so, Sciarra made a pro-Nice chant “Issa Nissa” (Go Nice!). The comment came in the context of the upcoming Côte d’Azur derby between Le Gym and Les Monégasques on Saturday evening. The two teams head into the game level on points in third and fourth.
TV Monaco, a state broadcaster, reacted by suspending Sciarra with immediate effect. The broadcaster stated that they “strongly condemn” the consultant’s comments and apologised to those offended.
