Nobody at AC Milan should get ahead of themselves after beating a Serie B team in the Coppa Italia, but the manner of it was encouraging in view of the trip to face Atalanta.

As Tuttosport (via MilanNews) recall this morning, Milan did what they had to do and perhaps even more, since a dream scenario materialised. They had qualification for the quarter-finals secured inside the first 23 minutes with four goals and activated energy-saving mode for the rest of the match.

Given the amount of games between now and the end of January, there was a great need for it. The Rossoneri did their job by showing the right mental approach and great maturity, aspects that had not always emerged in other matches against teams they should be beating on paper.

However, there is no doubting that Paulo Fonseca and the players will already be looking ahead to Friday evening when they will face Atalanta, who are second in the table and the team in the best form in the league at the moment.

Against Gian Piero Gasperini’s men it is never easy, especially when playing in Bergamo, but if the Diavolo are able to hold up defensively (against an attack much more dangerous than Empoli and Sassuolo) then they can get a positive result.

Indeed, the clash against their Lombardy rivals will say a lot about the Serie A campaign for Milan, considering that Napoli and Lazio will play each other this weekend. La Dea, on the other hand, have less pressure and would in any case remain in an excellent position.

The stars need to show up in order for the Diavolo to win, and Tijjani Reijnders is the leading man at the moment. His rocket of a strike in the first half last night means he has already reached seven goals for the season and has scored in all competitions.

Furthermore, he is also close to renewing his contract. The Dutchman spoke about it on Monday evening on Ziggo Sport and – when asked by Marco van Basten – he confirmed that things are moving along well.
