After a humiliating World Cup exit and one PR mess after another, the German FA (DFB) are now clashing with Bayern Munich.
What’s more: the controversial Mesut Özil/Erdoğan affair is once again involved.
The trouble has been caused by a World Cup advert used by DFB partners Mercedes-Benz. As part of their ‘Best Never Rest’ campaign, the car manufacturer used images of Bayern players Jérôme Boateng and Joshua Kimmich.
That doesn’t sound like much of an issue but it was for Bayern sponsor and Mercedes-Benz rival Audi, who own more than 5% of Bayern shares and the use of the players is a breach of Bayern’s “Guidelines on the use of personal rights and other rights of the national team players”, that much has been confirmed by Michael Gerlinger, Bayern’s legal director.
Gerlinger has asked the DFB to respond.
Images of Boateng and Kimmich were reportedly used at the last minute as the DFB instructed partners not to use Mesut Özil and İlkay Gündoğan as part of their campaigns following the pair’s meeting with Turkish president Recep Erdoğan.
