According to L’Équipe, the Trophée des Champions could be part of a wider revamp for French football for the 2024/25 season with a new refreshed format proposed for the competition that could be introduced from 2025.

Traditionally, the curtain raiser for the French football season which sees the winner of Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France face off for the trophy, the competition could be set to welcome two more teams. The new proposed format for the Trophée des Champions would follow a similar pattern to that in Italy and Spain.

The trophy could also be set for a change in date as well as format. Ordinarily, the competition would be held in summer at the start of the French domestic season. However, the new rendition of the Trophée des Champions would be switched to winter.

Heading to Congo in 2025?

The 2024 edition of the trophy will be played in Beijing, China at the start of the 2024/25 season as PSG and either second place or the winners of the Coupe de France will face off. Nevertheless, the 2025 version of the competition looks set to be held in Congo in 2025, L’Équipe report.
