Trent Alexander-Arnold’s poor form continued in Liverpool’s 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Napoli on Wednesday evening.
The 23-year-old has been criticised at the start of the 2022/23 season for a number of below-par performances.
And he was nowhere near his best once again in Liverpool’s opening Champions League game of the season in Naples.
Alexander-Arnold’s defending for Napoli’s second goal of the night, scored by André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, has come under extreme scrutiny.
The Englishman was dragged out of position and occupied a central role, letting Joe Gomez cover for him.
He stood very still as Anguissa was played through and the Cameroonian made no mistake when one vs one with Alisson Becker.
He has also been questioned for his lack of desire to get back and defend for Napoli’s third goal, scored by Giovanni Simeone.
Following his two errors in Italy, a video has gone viral on Twitter which shows numerous examples of his ‘crazy defending’ at the start of the 2022/23 campaign.
The 36-second long video has been posted on to Twitter by @MarwanOsaad and it doesn’t paint Alexander-Arnold in a good light,
The video focuses on four errors Alexander-Arnold has made this season.
The two against Napoli on Wednesday, as well as errors made against Manchester City in the Community Shield and in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.
It’s fair to say he could have done better on each occasion.
Liverpool legend Fowler was highly critical of Alexander-Arnold after the Napoli defeat.
“What I would say is you can’t question the desire of this team over the last few years, but you can tonight,” Liverpool legend Fowler said on BT Sport after the game, per Daily Mail.
“We know how good Napoli are and they’ve been brilliant, but Liverpool have been so poor.
“Joe Gomez will get all the stick [for his first-half performance] but look at the lack of desire from Trent.
“You can’t call out him going forward but defensively we can pick him apart because he doesn’t show the same desire to get back than he does to get forward and that’s wrong.
“Liverpool were shocking defensively.”
Alexander-Arnold is one of the first names on Liverpool’s team sheet and he has been for many years.
However, he has not been playing at a very high level at all and, if he continues making mistakes, could see his place come under threat.
