Transfer News: After Clement Lenglet, Tottenham Hotspur have their eyes set on Pau Torres

Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres is of interest to Tottenham Hotspur, according to the Mirror, as Spurs eye another defensive addition to the squad amidst the Clement Lenglet deal. Giovani Lo Celso is an option for the North London side to add in a potential deal.

The Barcelona defender is close to completing a loan move to North London and the Lilywhites have set their sights on another defender in La Liga. The 25-year-old is one of the hottest defensive prospects in Europe, having established himself in Spain’s national side.

Torres came up through Villarreal’s youth ranks and has now become a stalwart in the La Liga outfit. The 25-year-old spent time out on loan in Malaga in Spain’s second division in 2018/19 before making a place for himself in the Yellow Submarines’ starting XI the next season.

Tottenham are interested in getting Pau Torres.

Since the 2019/20 season, the defender has been a constant in the Villarreal side. The 25-year-old has featured in 133 games for the Yellow Submarines.

Last season saw the Spanish club go on an impressive run in the Champions League. Unai Emery’s side made it to the semi-finals before being knocked out by Liverpool and Torres’ contributions in the backline were a big reason for their success.

Torres has the qualities to compete

Currently at Tottenham, Cristian Romero and Eric Dier will be the first names for fans on Antonio Conte’s team sheet. Their performances last season merit their inclusion.

While Ben Davies has performed well in a centre-back role, a more natural option is almost through the gates in Lenglet. If we do get Torres, he’s a player with qualities to compete for a starting spot in the team as well.

Now 25, it seems the right time for the player to test out his skills in a top side. Playing for a PL giant such as Tottenham and succeeding in one of the best footballing leagues in the world would be sure to catch Luis Enrique’s eyes as well.

Spain travel to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar and while Torres is a strong contender to make the 26-man list, being a regular for the Spaniards is something that would be in the defender’s mind. Regular playing time, in that regard, would be a must.
