The January transfer window has been slow to get going this month but may be starting to heat up as clubs try to bolster their squads for the second half of the season.

This month, Arsenal and Chelsea are expected to be two of the teams trying to bring in at least one player each, with Ivan Toney a name on both clubs’ wishlists. Brighton striker Evan Ferguson has also been linked with the Blues, although the Seagulls value the teenager at more than £100m. Given the strictness of financial fair play rules, any signings might depend on sales though.

Tottenham and Liverpool could look to bring in reinforcements to deal with the likes of Son Heung-min and Mohamed Salah being absent at mid-season international tournaments. Spurs have completed the signing of Genoa’s Radu Dragusin to improve their defence and added Timo Werner to their attack, while Chelsea eye Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, but could face competition from Real Madrid as they also target Kylian Mbappe.

Manchester UnitedJadon Sancho having sealed a loan return to Borussia Dortmund. There is also interest in Hannibal Mejbri and Facundo Pellistri, who could leave on loan this month.

Bayern Munich confirm Eric Dier signing

The Bundesliga champions have confirmed the signing of Eric Dier in a deal that, initially, is on loan for the remainder of the season though there is an option to make it permanent.

Dier has made 365 appearances for Spurs in all competitions in nine-and-a-half years with the club. A Spurs statement read: “We wish Eric and his family all the best for the future.”

Dier said: “This move is a dream come true for me, because as a child you want to play for a club like Bayern one day.

“Bayern is one of the biggest clubs in the world and has an incredible history. I want to help the team with my versatility in defence.

“I’m really looking forward to my new teammates and the fans at the Allianz Arena, which in my eyes is one of the best stadiums in the world.”

West Ham in the market for Kilman?

The Daily Mail are reporting that West Ham United are keen on Wolves captain Max Kilman and are considering a brazen bid to wrestle him away from the midlands.

It seems they have very little chance of being successful with Kilman a crucial part of Wolves’ defence and the club are under no financial pressure to sell.

The 26-year-old defender has been an ever present for his club so far this season so if this deal happens it’ll likely be in the summer at the earliest.

Arsenal Women sign USA international Emily Fox

Emily Fox is a Gooner. She joins from NWSL team North Carolina Courage and it will be the first time Fox has played for a team outside of the USA.

The 25-year-old right-back will provide defensive back-up for Arsenal as they press ahead with their Women’s Super League title charge.

A spot in the squad opened up after Noelle Moritz’s move to Aston Villa, and Fox will provide competition for the likes of Katie McCabe and Steph Catley.

She said: “It feels amazing to have signed here. When I think of Arsenal, I think of excellence, I think of a global organisation, I think of family.

“I think of pushing the standards of football and especially in the women’s game. It’s a huge honour to get the opportunity to represent this club and I’m excited to get started and play in front of our supporters.”

Brobbey to Old Trafford?

Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag, looks like he may be dipping into his old well once again and is keeping tabs on Ajax striker Brian Brobbey.

Ten Hag’s former club have already supplied the services of Tyrell Malacia and Antony to Manchester United since the Dutchman took over and they may be considering a premium price for Brobbey as well.

United will not make a move for the forward in this window but are beginning to plan for the summer says the Daily Mirror.

Brobbey scored 13 goals in 32 Eredivisie appearances last season, but has found the net only eight times in the league in 2023/24.

Sam Kerr’s focus on recovery, not contract talks

Emma Hayes has refused to speculate over the future of injured striker Sam Kerr, whose Chelsea contract expires this summer.

Kerr underwent surgery on Thursday on an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury suffered during what boss Hayes described as an “innocuous” turning and shooting exercise during the Blues’ warm-weather training in Morocco.

The lengthy recovery process all but guarantees the Australia captain will miss the remainder of both the Women’s Super League and Champions League campaigns, the latter Hayes’ last chance to win that elusive trophy before she parts ways with Chelsea to begin her new role as head coach of the United States women’s national team.

The Australia striker has suffered an ACL injury and is out of contract at the end of the season.
