Then there is the saga surrounding Frenkie de Jong and his future at the Camp Nou, which rumbles on, and Manchester United and Chelsea remain strongly linked to the Barcelona midfielder. The Spaniards want to bring in Bernardo Silva as a replacement for him if a deal is arranged with Man City, while Marcos Alonso could move from Stamford Bridge to Catalunya.

Elsewhere, Thomas Tuchel has hinted at the need for more players despite a win at Everton, with Wesley Fofana linked to the Blues. Fofana’s exit could provide Leicester with ammunition to sign players, as the only club in Europe’s top five leagues without one incoming player, the Foxes have already lost goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and midfielder James Maddison is wanted by Newcastle, meaning Brendan Rodgers could be busy after watching his side cough up a 2-0 lead against Brentford to open up the season.

Timo Werner thanks ‘special’ Chelsea fans as return to RB Leipzig confirmed

Timo Werner has thanked Chelsea fans as his move back to RB Leipzig was confirmed.

The Germany forward returns to the Bundesliga club - the club he left for Chelsea back in 2020 - in a deal understood be worth £25million.

Chelsea paid £54million for Werner, with the 26-year-old playing a pivotal role in the Blues’ Champions League triumph in Lisbon in 2021.

“Today marks the end of my journey with Chelsea FC,” Werner posted on social media. “I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent at this special club.

“At this point I would like to express my appreciation for my teammates, the coaches and staff, and especially for you, the special supporters of Chelsea Football Club.

Villa sign England’s Rachel Daly on three-year deal

Aston Villa have signed European champion and England international Rachel Daly on a three-year contract.

The versatile Lioness played left-back in Sarina Wiegman’s Euro 2022-winning side but can also play higher up the pitch, with Villa manager Carla Ward intending to use her talents up front.

Harrogate-born Daly, 30, makes her return to England after playing for the Houston Dash in America’s NWSL, with previous spells at Leeds, Lincoln Ladies and West Ham.

Ward said: “This is a big signing for us and one we’ve worked hard on completing. Rachel is a top forward and a proven goalscorer.

“Having performed admirably at full-back this summer, she showed us that she is a player you simply need in your team.”

Bernardo Silva latest

Manchester City have dismissed reports they have accepted Barcelona’s bid for Bernardo Silva. The Mail says the Blues were forced to throw cold water on the talk coming from Spain that they had agreed a £46million fee to sell the midfielder to the LaLiga giants. The paper adds the 28-year-old told his club last year he would like to move to Spain to be closer his family in Portugal.

Arsenal in talkse to sign Sandro Tonali

Arsenal and AC Milan have discussed a move to send Sandro Tonali to the Emirates.

The Mail report the Gunners are keen on the Italian midfielder.

The 22-year-old would cost £46m, with Mikel Arteta eager to upgrade his midfield after a productive summer.

Christensen and Kessie 'could leave for free’

Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie will be available to sign for other clubs if Barcelona fail to register the duo in time for the opening game of La Liga season, according to ESPN.

The players joined this summer from Chelsea and Milan respectively, but Barcelona are struggling financially and there “is still not enough incoming cash for Barca to be able to register all of their signings and contract renewals, although some could be registered now”.

A clause in both players’ contracts could be enacting to ensure they can leave and find new clubs should they fail to be registered for the season, which starts this weekend as Barca take on Rayo Vallecano.

Chelsea weigh up third bid for Wesley Fofana

Chelsea are considering a third bid for Leicester defender Wesley Fofana.

Leicester have dug in their heels over the pricetag for the highly rated young defender, demanding no less than £80m – a world-record fee for a defender – for the wantaway Frenchman.

The Independent has already reported that the clubs are around £10m apart in their valuations of the player. And the Mail reports the Blues could be about to submit a huge third bid to get the deal over the line.

Leicester are also trying to fend off interest in midfield Youri Tielemans, James Maddison and Harvey Barnes, having already sanctioned the sale of goalkeeper-captain Kasper Schmeichel.
