Transfer News: Barcelona set to rekindle interest in Manchester United frontman Edinson Cavani

According to Daily Star (h/t Express), Barcelona are considering Edinson Cavani of Manchester United as a potential option to lead their line this season itself.

The Catalan giants showed interest in the Uruguay international this summer. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer assured Cavani that he would have an important role to play this season, leading the striker to extend his contract by a year.

However, things have changed ever since Cristiano Ronaldo has arrived at Old Trafford to dislodge Cavani in the pecking order. And Barcelona want to take advantage of that by tabling an offer for Cavani as early as January.

Edinson Cavani will be out of contract next year.

They would need help from the Red Devils in order to land Cavani, the report notes. Given the financial crisis at Camp Nou, Barcelona can only afford a loan deal and would need Man United to pay as much as half of the striker’s £250,000-a-week wages.

Where next for Cavani?

It is unclear whether United would be open to such a move. But it remains a fact that their wage bill has gone up significantly with the addition of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and Ronaldo – with the latter being paid £500,000-a-week.

The club may well lose the former PSG and Napoli striker next summer at the end of his contract. But at 34, it is understood that he is no longer in his prime.

With Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, the misfiring Anthony Martial, and now Cristiano Ronaldo, United have a decent frontline. But Cavani showed last season that he can still get goals.

From a fans’ point of view, it makes more sense to keep the striker rather than loaning him out in the last 6 months of his contract and paying half his wages. If he can replicate his 17-goal tally from last season, it would certainly be worth keeping him until the final days of his deal.
