Transfer activity at Celtic is very much picking up pace

It appears the transfer activity at Celtic is very much picking up pace. Alex Bernabei was the subject of a 3am reveal by his now former Argentinian club Lanus, with Celtic now expected to follow suit and confirm the signing of the Argentine Under 19 international. Meanwhile Mark Hendry at Football Scotland – the journalist who first broke the story of Bernabei being Celtic’s preferred target to compete with Greg Taylor for the left back position for this season – has also stated Jota will be the next deal to be confirmed –

‘CONFIRMED! Ange Postecoglou getting his deals done early. Jota next.’

The Daily Record also appear confident of Jota’s protracted transfer saga being concluded positively, quoting a ‘Celtic source’ as stating the deal to make Jota our superstar from Portugal rather than just a loan bhoy ‘is just about done’.

“Record Sport reported earlier this month deals for Bernabei and Jota were well under way, but that the Argentine left-back was set to be announced first

“And with Lanus confirming this morning that he has joined Celtic, it’s now over to the Portuguese where the finishing touches to his contract are being made.

“A Celtic source told us the deal “is just about done”.

Celtic have confirmed the transfer this morning as we have just reported.

Meanwhile the exit door is also seeing some action with Chris Jullien reported as having been put through a rigorous medical with newly promoted German side Schalke and the Scottish Sun reporting an initial 12-month loan deal with an option to buy will be announced ‘imminently.

And the exit links don’t stop there with Stephen McGowan of the Daily Mail – often a reliable source on Celtic transfer activity during the Lawwell years – stating Jullien’s exit is likely to be followed by the departure of three more players deemed surplus to requirements under Ange Postecoglou.

‘Keeper Vasilis Barkas is already on loan at Utrecht and Albian Ajeti, Ismael Soro and Boli Bolingoli are all surplus to requirements. A five year deal is already in place for left-back Alex Bernabei after the Argentine flew to Glasgow last Friday. Despite prolonged negotiations over a deal for Jota, the Portuguese winger is still expected to be part of the squad which flies to Austria for three pre-season games on Monday.’

Celtic have also been linked with Schalke central defender Malick Thiaw, yet the substance of those links has yet to be established at this stage.

Although the reported £7m fee would be a hefty investment, given Celtic’s substantial outlay already on Cameron Carter-Vickers from Spurs, Alex Bernabei from Lanus, and with Jota now seemingly a done deal and likely to cost in the region of £6.5m, the reported fee for Thiaw would match what Celtic paid Toulouse to take Christopher Jullien to Celtic, yet given the age of Thiaw the likelihood of making a substantial profit on that deal may well be enough for Celtic to consider splashing the cash now to secure a superbly talented defender knowing full well later down the line there could be a massive payday ahead for the club.

Celtic head to Austria for a pre-season trip on Monday and who makes the flight out of Glasgow may well give us more clues as to those coming into the club, but also to those who may be making alternative employment arrangements for the season ahead.
