Cristian Romero transfer move from Atalanta to Tottenham Hotspur investigated for fraud

According to Daily Mail Online, Tottenham Hotspur will be under investigation for fraud for one of their dealings this summer, which came in the form of them signing Cristian Romero from Atalanta. They got dragged into this scandal due to the Italian police investigating the recent dealings of Juventus.

Fabio Paratici, Managing Director of Football for Tottenham, is also under investigation for his previous history with Juve. He was instrumental in bringing Romero to London, and it has attracted attention from the Italian cops for false accounting.

The defender initially left the Bianconeri permanently for La Dea for £13.5million before transferring to Spurs on the same day for £47million– a deal which also has an option to buy him permanently at the end of the season. Last Friday, the police raided the offices in Turin and Milan to find any wrongdoings between 2019 and 2021.

The allegations are on the premise of falsely recording transfer values to meet the Financial Fair Play regulations. A total of 42 transfers are currently being investigated.

The centre-back’s transfer history is very peculiar when you take a closer look. Cuti Romero had moved to the Turin based club from Genoa for a fee of £22million. However, he has never played at Juventus Stadium as their player. He was sent back on a season-long loan followed by a loan to Gli Orobici for £3.4million.

Tottenham’s involvement?

Getting dragged into this is the last thing we want, especially with us not having encountered such an experience in our past. It is unclear as to what will happen if Junvetus or Paratici are found guilty of any wrongdoings, but there seems to be no indication of any wrongdoings by us.

The biggest concern would be the Managing Director’s involvement in these transfers due to his previous affiliations. If he is found guilty, it would be certainly a black spot on his illustrious career and put a question mark over our decision to bring him to N17.

We would not want any transfer bans in these conditions, especially when Antonio Conte has arrived as the new manager- although there is nothing to suggest that it would even be the punishment in the worst case scenario.
