Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament, as confirmed by the club on Thursday.
The 28-year-old is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days, with the injury ruling him out for the majority of the upcoming season. Maddison sustained the damage during Spurs' pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in South Korea last weekend.
Speaking after the match, manager Thomas Frank confirmed that Maddison had injured the same knee that kept him out of last season’s Europa League final win over Manchester United.
After returning to the UK on Monday, Maddison underwent a series of medical tests, which confirmed initial fears of a serious cruciate ligament injury.
His absence is a major blow for Tottenham ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, with the England international set to begin a long-term recovery programme.
