Tottenham Hotspur entertain Eintracht Frankfurt tonight in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

Ange Postecoglou’s future as Spurs manager could hinge on whether he can end the club’s 17-year trophy drought this season. With the Lilywhites languishing in 14th position in the Premier League, this competition is the only remaining avenue for success.

Dejan Kulusevski, Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin are all ruled out for the first leg. Kulusevski and Danso may return for the second encounter next week, but Dragusin is still in the early stages of recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Aside from the unavailable trio, every senior Spurs player was spotted in training.

Frankfurt lifted the Europa League back in 2022 and have ambitions to repeat that feat in Bilbao next month.

Dino Toppmoller’s options have been depleted over the last few weeks, with several absences in key positions.

First-choice goalkeeper Kevin Trapp is likely to miss out with 21-year-old Brazilian stopper Kaua expected to deputise.

Turkish prospect Can Uzun wasn’t able to feature in the weekend’s defeat to Werder Bremen due to illness. The teenager will be assessed alongside versatile winger Ansgar Knauff, who is being hampered by a knee issue.

Tottenham: DWLLW

Tottenham beat Southampton 3-1 at the weekend, a result that relegated the Saints from the Premier League.

Brennan Johnson grabbed a clinical brace and Mathys Tel recorded his first Premier League goal from the spot. It was only their second league win at home since the start of November.

Ange Postecoglou will be hoping his players can carry over that winning feeling into tonight’s European tie.

The last time the North London club reached the quarter-finals of this competition was back in 2013. They haven’t progressed further than the last eight of a European competition since their famous run to the Champions League final six years ago.

Frankfurt: WWLWL

Frankfurt enter tonight’s European tie off the back of a 2-0 away defeat to Werder Bremen last Saturday.

Despite the loss, they remain in third position in the Bundesliga but are 20 points behind league leaders Bayern Munich.

In the Europa League’s league phase, the German outfit finished just one point behind Tottenham in fifth place.

Dino Toppmoller’s side dispatched Ajax in the previous round with a 6-2 victory on aggregate. World Cup winner Mario Gotze recorded a brace at their home, the Deutsche Bank Park.

Last Meeting: Tottenham 3-2 Eintracht Frankfurt, Champions League, 12th October 2022

It was a chaotic last meeting between these two sides, which included a red card, a missed penalty and five goals.

The visitors team capitalised on a defensive error from Spurs to gain the advantage inside 15 minutes.

Eric Dier’s heavy touch was pounced on by Jesper Lindstrom, whose low cross was palmed out by Hugo Lloris. After composed play from Sebastian Rode, the ball reached Daichi Kamada who stroked into the empty net.

Five minutes later, the hosts had restored parity through Heung-min Son. The South Korean slotted into the bottom corner after being smartly played through by Harry Kane.

Kane was then clumsily bundled over inside the area by Kristijan Jakic. Following a VAR review, referee Carlos del Cerro pointed to the spot. The England captain stepped up to take the penalty and converted in customary fashion to complete a quickfire comeback.

By half-time, Antonio Conte’s outfit had breached Kevin Trapp’s goal again. Industrious work down the right-flank from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg resulted in the Dane lofting a cross towards the back post. The unmarked Son unleashed an unstoppable volley that flew past the goalkeeper and gave his team a commanding lead.

On the stroke of the hour, Frankfurt were reduced to 10 men. Brazilian defender Tuta unfairly prevented Son from breaking clear and was shown a second yellow card.

Despite being numerically disadvantaged, the Germans halved the deficit with three minutes remaining. Second-half substitute Faride Alidou was left unmarked from a corner and planted a header past the helpless Lloris.

Frankfurt were desperately pressing for a late leveller and Bryan Gil infiltrated the gaps in defence to win Spurs a second penalty. Kane blazed over his second attempt from 12 yards, but his blushes were spared moments later by the sound of the full-time whistle.
