Tottenham striker Richarlison in action for Brazil
Tottenham striker Richarlison has revealed that he will seek ‘psychological help’ when he returns to Spurs after the international break.
The 26-year-old said he has endured a ‘turbulent time’ off the field in recent months and was pictured in tears after being substituted in Brazil’s recent 5-1 victory over Bolivia.
Richarlison missed a golden opportunity to score before being substituted. This comes after he has faced scrutiny after struggling for form following his switch from Everton to Tottenham last summer.
The Brazilian joined the London side for a fee of £60m. He notched just three goals in 35 appearances last season and has failed to score in four Premier League games so far this term.
In a post-match interview after Brazil’s victory late on Tuesday evening, Richarlison opened up on his off-field struggles after people with an eye on his money ‘walked away’ from him.
The striker said this had contributed to his emotional reaction against Bolivia, adding that he will seek ‘psychological help’ at Tottenham.
“I went through a turbulent time in the last five months off the field. Now things are right at home. People who only had an eye on my money walked away from me,” Richarlison told the Brazilian newspaper Globo.
“Now things will start to flow, I’m sure I’ll get a good run at Tottenham and make things happen again.
“That sad moment wasn’t even because I played poorly, in my opinion I didn’t play a bad game [against Bolivia], it was more of an outburst about the things that were happening off the field, which got out of control not on my part, but on the part of people who were close to me.
“I’m going to go back to England, seek psychological help, from a psychologist, to work on my mind. That’s it, come back stronger.
“I believe I will be in the next squad, I will work for that. It’s about getting a good streak at Tottenham, this week I’m going to sit down and talk to them, I need a good streak, get the rhythm of the game.”
While Richarlison’s recent form in front of goal may be poor, Tottenham, on the whole, have got off to a great start this season under new manager Ange Postecoglou.
Spurs have won three and drawn one of their four opening Premier League matches and sit in second place in the table. Their fans will hope that Richarlison can finally find the net when they play Sheffield United at home on Saturday.
