Tottenham Opinion: Why Patrik Schick would be a smart fit at Spurs?

Back in January, the Football Italia claimed that Tottenham were interested in signing AS Roma forward Patrik Schick and had also made an offer. However, Roma turned it down as they wanted to keep hold of the Czech Republic international.

Patrik Schick, 23, joined Roma in the summer of 2017 after he refused to extend a contract with Sampdoria. He hasn’t lived up to the expectations at the Stadio Olimpico, bagging just eight goals in all competitions in two seasons.

Truly, a move to Roma hasn’t worked at all for Schick, who enjoyed an excellent debut campaign in the Serie A where he scored 11 goals in 32 games for Sampdoria. He is just 23 and has a lot of potential to fulfil, maybe he needs a change of environment to get his career back on track.

With that in mind, Tottenham should rekindle their interest in Schick and offer him a chance to revitalise his stuttering career.

Tanguy Ndombele has already joined Spurs this summer in what might be one of the best buys by any club ahead of the 2019/20 season.

The north Londoners have also signed Jack Clarke from Leeds United but he will spend the upcoming season with the Whites in the Championship. But Mauricio Pochettino must now aim to sign a new striker ahead of the new campaign.

Fernando Llorente’s contract has expired and Vincent Janssen is expected to leave the club this summer. Harry Kane is one of the best strikers in Europe but he needs more competition or at least an able deputy to fill in for him when required.

That being said, Schick would be a fantastic fit for Spurs, however, it’s worth noting that he had a poor season last year for Roma. Pochettino will be hoping his management and playing in a better team will bring the best out of the Czech Republic international, who has scored eight goals in 18 games for his nation.

Standing at 6ft 3in tall, Schick is incredibly strong in the air as well as technically gifted, more than capable of keeping hold of the ball in tight situations and bringing his teammates into the game.

His ability to link up play between midfield and attack would help Spurs improve the fluidity of their play in the final third.

Due to his towering frame, the ex-Sampdoria ace would give an entirely different option in attack for Pochettino, whilst being an ideal back-up for Kane.

Verdict

Schick’s stock has gone done considerably in the last 12 months. Tottenham should take advantage of the situation and attempt to lure him away to north London. The Czech forward could also jump at the chance to work under an exciting manager like Pochettino.
