Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur express interest in Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nubel

According to GOAL (h/t ESPN), Tottenham Hotspur have identified Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nubel as a potential target in the January transfer window. He is currently plying his trade on loan at AS Monaco after failing to displace Manuel Neuer at Allianz Arena.

Nubel could be set to join Tottenham despite the recent extension of Hugo Lloris. They are keen on adding the loanee to their squad to boost the quality in the goalkeeping spot. Should this move happen, it would put question marks over Pierluigi Gollini’s time at N17.

Gollini has not put a foot wrong at Spurs, but at the same time, he has not shown any signs of being a long-term option for us. He is currently on loan from Atalanta and it remains to be seen if we choose not to activate the buy option in his current Spurs contract.

Solid option?

The German was one of the highly-rated goalkeepers when he was playing for Schalke in Germany. Many expected him to take over the role from Neuer at Bayern, but that was not the case at all. He was sent on loan to Ligue 1 so that he could enjoy more minutes under his belt, which has been the case.

Nevertheless, the 25-year-old is a good prospect between the sticks and could potentially replace Lloris in the future. After all, we need to plan ahead in time to find a suitable target who can fill the skipper’s boots.

However, there could be an added hurdle to any deal since the Bavarian loanee will be at Monaco until 2023. If we are vying to get his signature next summer, we would need to overcome the complications involved in such an unconventional loan transfer where the player is away on loan at the same club for multiple seasons at a time.

The German ace has featured in 30 matches this season, and he has earned eight clean sheets across all competitions. He has contributed to his side’s challenge for European places, even though his teammates haven’t really painted themselves in glory.

It remains to be seen how this situation will develop in the coming months. At his age and with his CV in Germany, Nubel certainly looks like a smart addition to our squad. He could aim to replace Lloris in the long run.

Or, could compete with Gollini for a starting place at N17, if we choose to sign the Atalanta ace permanently at the end of this season.
