Tottenham are reportedly keen to re-sign former academy graduate Marcus Edwards from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.

The 24-year-old has developed into a brilliant player whilst in Portugal, after leaving Tottenham back in 2019.

Portuguese publication Correio de Manha have reported that Spurs are looking to add to Ange Postecoglou’s dangerous attack, that has scored 23 goals in 11 Premier League games, with their former academy prospect.

Edwards originally left London for Guimarães, and began to hone his trade at Vitoria S.C. The Camden-born-winger currently has four goal contributions in seven starts this season.

After scoring against Tottenham in October 2022, this time for new club Sporting Lisbon, Edwards spoke to reporters about his journey, via The Daily Mail: “I have grown up in a lot of ways, I’m 23 and last time I was at Tottenham, I was only 17, 18, I was only a baby so I have definitely grown up.

“I was just a kid, you know what kids are like. I was just a kid growing up, so I could be like, whatever. Of course I was naturally a bit of a Spurs fan but I was playing for the club and went to all the games and stuff.

“Everyone has a different journey. For me it worked out, going over to Portugal. It took me a long time though.”

If Tottenham are to challenge for the Premier League title, quality depth is needed, in a move that could mirror that of North London rivals Arsenal and their capture of Leandro Trossard, who added talent and versatility during last season’s Premier League run-in.

Furthermore, it is rumoured that Spurs have a potential buy-back clause, allowing them to only pay 65% of Edwards’ £52 million release clause – £34 million – making the deal much more attractive for Daniel Levy.

The early pacesetters recorded their first Premier League defeat of the season on Monday, a 4-1 thrashing from London rivals Chelsea, in a game where a lack of depth played a role in Tottenham’s loss.

With recent news of Richarlison’s injury, Edwards could provide exactly what Spurs need in January.
