Tottenham Hotspur have announced the signing of defender Josefine Rybrink. The Swedish international has penned a six-month deal and will join Robert Vilahamns side until the end of the season.

The 27-year-old defender, who will wear the No.12 shirt, spent the majority of her career in her native Sweden before this move to North London.

Experience forged in Sweden’s top leagues

Rybrink began her professional playing days at Kungsbacka in Sweden’s second-tier Elitettan league. After a successful three-year spell at Kungsbacka, Rybrink completed a move to her hometown club, Kristianstads.

The Swede made her first appearance in the Damallsvenskan at Kristianstads. During her four-year spell at the club, she made 87 appearances and finished runner-up in the 2019 Swedish Cup. In November 2021, Rybrink moved to fellow Swedish side BK Häcken. The defender made more than 100 appearances for the Getingarna, including in the Women’s Champions League.

Internationally, Rybrink played for Sweden’s U-17 and U-19 sides before making her senior debut in 2021 against Austria. She has since earned seven more caps for her country.

‘Tottenham has something really special going on’

Speaking on her move to Tottenham, Rybrink said: “I’m so excited to be here. It’s a big club, so to be able to move here and come to this club, I’m looking forward to it.

“I have heard so much about it [the WSL]. It’s a really good league, and I think it will suit me very well. All the games are really competitive, a lot of tough games, so I’m really looking forward to playing against the best players in the world.

“I want to become a better football player here and also grow as a person, and I feel like Tottenham has something really special going on, to compete against the top teams and try to win some titles as well.”

Tottenham currently sit sixth in the WSL ahead of big clashes against North London rivals Arsenal and both Manchester sides. Head coach Vilahamn will hope the signing of such an experienced defender will allow the team to build on last season’s sixth-place finish.

Spurs are in action this week as they take on Everton in a rearranged FA Cup clash on Wednesday, before facing Manchester United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
