In a recent print edition, Bild revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are set to rival Chelsea for Bayer 04 Leverkusen ace Jonathan Tah. It has been claimed that Spurs could move in for the German centre-back after failing to land him in the past.

Tah’s Impressive Form In German Football This Season

Tah is having a solid campaign at the German club as he has produced a series of impressive performances at the centre of their backline. The 28-year-old has made 33 appearances for Bayer 04 Leverkusen this season, scoring six goals in all competitions.

The German defensive ace has given a good account of himself when defending inside his half based on his average of 0.8 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 3.3 clearances per game in Bundesliga. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from the back based on his pass success rate of 94.9% in the top tier of German football (stats via whoscored).

His current contract at the German club will run out in the summer of 2025. Thus, Spurs could potentially land him on a cut-price deal in the upcoming transfer period.

Should Tottenham Hotspur Go For Tah?

Tah is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his team on the defensive end of the field. He usually puts his foot through the ball when required and can use his robust 1.95m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air.

The German defender is proficient at playing his way out from the back. Therefore, we can expect him to bring more bite and steel to Tottenham boss Angelos Postecoglu’s defensive department.

At 28, Tah has already entered his prime and has what it takes to make an immediate impact at the North London club if Postecoglu can devise a way to win the race for his services in the summer transfer window.

With all things considered, Tah would be a great option for Tottenham to consider ahead of the new campaign. However, there are some question marks over whether he can cope with the high intensity of Premier League football. Still, the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting a player of Tah’s skillset, so Postecoglu should go for the German centre-half later this year.
