According to The Times (subscription required), as cited by Metro, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a shock move for Jesse Lingard. The Lilywhites have held initial talks with intermediaries over the potential transfer of the Manchester United attacker, who has been ostracised from the group by Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer. Man United could potentially earn as much as £20 million from the sale of Lingard.

Why Jesse Lingard Must Leave Manchester United

Lingard’s downfall at Manchester United truly began in early January, when the Red Devils acquired the services of a certain Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese international quickly made an impact in the Premier League, becoming one of Solskjaer’s biggest weapons going forward. His creativity, technical prowess and work ethic, combined with the return of Paul Pogba from injury, have filled the club’s void in the creative department.

Lingard himself has also struggled due to his own futility, with the playmaker notably scoring just one goal last season. It eventually forced Manchester United to sign another attack-minded midfielder this summer, in the shape of Donny van de Beek.

The Dutchman has already started his Premier League career with a goal, and his addition could put Lingard further down the pecking order. Hence, a move away from Old Trafford makes sense as he seeks to revive his career this season.

How Does He Fit In At Tottenham Hotspur?

Lingard’s potential move to Tottenham Hotspur could hinge on Dele Alli’s future at the club.

The English international has fallen out of favour in recent years, failing to provide consistent performances to the table. His form has dipped heavily, and the playmaker has now fallen behind Giovani Lo Celso in the pecking order. He has also been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Alli’s departure could make sense for Jose Mourinho as he looks to get rid of his hefty wages. Lingard, in that regard, would serve as a like for like replacement for his compatriot.

The Manchester United star shares a good relationship with Mourinho, whose role was critical in helping the playmaker make his breakthrough three years ago. In fact, it was under Mourinho when Lingard truly made his mark in the Premier League, taking part in 14 goals during the 2017/18 campaign.

Lingard’s direct style of play, combined with his work-rate, should bode well for Tottenham’s style of play. While he might not be a regular starter, the 27-year-old’s experience in the English top-flight should help Mourinho better deal with the strenuous schedule of the 2020/21 campaign.
