In a recent tweet, Sky journalist Philipp Hinze stated that Tottenham Hotspur are in the running to sign Red Bull Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan this summer. It has been claimed that Spurs would have to rival Newcastle United in pursuit of the French centre-back in the upcoming transfer window.

Simakan’s Impressive Form In Bundesliga This Season

Simakan is enjoying a solid campaign at the German club after he put in a run of dominant performances at the heart of RB Leipzig’s backline. The 23-year-old has made 37 appearances for the German outfit this season, scoring two goals and picking up two assists in all competitions.

The French talent has been a rock at the back as he is averaging 1.6 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 2.3 clearances per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He has even been tidy when distributing possession from inside his half based on his pass completion rate of 86.7% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).

Simakan is under contract at the German club until the summer of 2027. Therefore, it won’t be easy for Tottenham to sign him on the cheap in the next transfer window.

Is Simakan A Good Fit For Tottenham Hotspur?

Simakan is a good tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to secure possession back for his team. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when the opposition are on the front foot.

The French talent can use his robust 1.87m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. He even excels at playing his way out from the back but there are some question marks over whether he can adapt to the high intensity of Premier League football if Spurs manage to bring him on board later this year.

We can expect Simakan to add more bite and steel to Tottenham head coach Angelos Postecoglu’s defence. He is good enough to compete for a regular first-team spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season. Thus, the North London club would be wise to move in for him in the summer transfer window.

At 23, the best is yet to come from Simakan. However, there is no denying that he would be a great fit for Tottenham‘s needs in the long run.
