Tottenham Hotspur have recalled young striker Dane Scarlett from his loan move at Ipswich Town.

Scarlett has hardly featured for the Championship high-flyers this season so a return to North London seemed inevitable.

Whilst it remains to be seen what this means for the future of the teenager, fellow striker Freddie Ladapo is one Ipswich player that could benefit from this change in Kieran McKenna’s squad.

Dane Scarlett recalled

Town have been firing on all cylinders following their promotion up to the Championship and some of the players have been victims of this success.

Scarlett is certainly one of these with all 12 of his appearances in the league coming as a substitute.

He has totalled 146 minutes across these outings, 20 minutes against Millwall and Southampton being the most action he has seen in 2023/24.

Scarlett’s most recent run-out came in the 2-2 draw with bitter rivals Norwich City and he was part of a triple change in the 90th minute, something which really displays where McKenna saw him in the pecking order

The 19-year-old’s recall to Tottenham will have its winners and losers, including fellow strikers Kayden Jackson and Freddie Ladapo.

Freddie Ladapo’s Ipswich Town future

Ladapo has been used just as sparingly as Scarlett was by McKenna in the Championship.

But the 30-year-old has started all four of their EFL Cup fixtures this term, finding the back of the net when crossing paths with Reading and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

These glimpses have given the former Plymouth Argyle attacker a chance to prove his worth and he is likely to be a primary benefactor of Scarlett’s departure.

Ladapo arrived at Portman Road last summer and played a key role in the club’s glorious promotion campaign.

Scoring 17 times and appearing in every single League One game, this certainly proved to be a very shrewd acquisition from the club, especially on a free transfer with Ladapo’s Rotherham United contract having expired.

Only a handful of players outscored the Nigerian in the division, five to be exact, including David McGoldrick and Jonson Clarke-Harris of Derby County and Peterborough United respectively.

At the summit of that particular metric was Ladapo’s teammate Conor Chaplin, who scored 26 times and has gone on to take to the Championship like a duck to water.

Whilst Chaplin has had the chance to shine, the same can’t be said for Ladapo and Scarlett’s loan being cut short could be significant for him.

It is no secret that the schedule for EFL teams can be grueling and depth is needed. Ladapo's worth as a squad player has increased significantly as a result of Spurs' call and McKenna may now be determined to keep hold of him.

In the summer, Derby were reportedly amongst those interested in Ladapo and there likely will be other suitors in January but an increased importance and more minutes on offer could see him remain a Tractor Boy.
