Top Five Manchester United Fan Chants

Manchester United is one of the world’s most esteemed sporting institutions and a brand that is identifiable throughout the globe.

The club’s popularity has been tempered by success on the field and the fans have been privy to a glorious past and a bright future. Old Trafford is a cauldron on the best of nights and houses some of the best fans in the world.

The large collection of chants that ring out in the stadium is a testament to the rich culture the fans add to the institution. We take a look at what we think are the top five.

1. Glory Glory Man United

Perhaps the most recognizable of United’s chants. Straight forward lyrics, a catchy tune and the aura of invincibility that accompanies it makes for a special atmosphere whenever it is sung.

It uses the same tune as the American Civil War song “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. The word Hallelujah in the chorus “Glory, Glory, Hallelujah” has been replaced by ‘Man United’.

“Glory Glory Man United” was also a single released by the United squad prior to the 1983 FA Cup Final. Written by Frank Renshaw, it has gained a wide audience and is often sung at the Theatre of Dreams.

A full version of the song was released in 2007. However, it is the first stanza of the chant that has captured the imagination of fans and continues to be sung to this very day.

2. We shall not be moved

A fan chant that resonates with the position Manchester United occupied in the Premier League for the majority of the last three decades. Times may have changed and fortunes altered, but United cannot be kept down for long.

The chant was back in full force earlier in the 2020/21 season as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men mounted a surprise title challenge. Hopefully, it is here to stay and a new generation will be given the chance to render it with gusto.

3. United We Love You

A Manchester United fan chant that is simple to sing and is straight from the heart. The club means a lot to several millions around the globe and there is no better way than this chant to make the point clear.

The single was released in 1993 by the club and went on to hit the 37th position in the UK singles chart. It may not have reached the top position in the rankings but occupies a spot in the heart of United fans worldwide.

4. Take Me Home United Road

A Manchester United fan chant that borrows its lyrics and melody from John Denver’s 1971 country classic ‘Take me home, country roads’, it has a rather pleasant tune that encourages sing along.

Home is where the heart is and for United fans, there is no ground more hallowed than Old Trafford The place where miracles come true, no wonder it is nicknamed the Theatre of Dreams.

5. United Calypso

The iconic anthem by Edric Connor was a favourite song among United fans in the football stands in the late 1950s. An ode to Sir Matt Busby and his incredible team, it celebrates their talents to this day.

The song garnered widespread attention and hit its zenith before the 1957 FA Cup final between United and Aston Villa. Six out of the 11 players who started the game lost their lives nine months later in the Munich air disaster.

They may be long gone but their memory is well and truly alive in the Old Trafford terraces.
