Toni Kroos has revealed how he “rued” signing a contract extension at Bayern Munich as he felt undervalued by the club.

Kroos was on loan at Bayer Leverkusen between 2008 and 2010, but at the end of that spell signed on for another three years in the Bavarian capital despite not cementing a first team place.

The Germany international would go on to become one of Bayern’s rocks in midfield before eventually leaving to join Real Madrid in 2013.

But that contract, back in 2010, still haunts Kroos, who admits things could have been very different had he not put pen-to-paper.

“I was often told how great I was and how I was doing everything right,” said Kroos in a documentary about his life due for release next month.

“Still I did not play. I was convinced I deserved more.

“Originally I did not want to return [from Leverkusen]. When I signed my extension, I rued it ten minutes later.

“While I signed the contract, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge commented: ‘Wow, you have got a great contract now.’ It was like he told me: ‘So now you have to play a little better.'”
