Ivan Toney hopes he made enough of an impression to be on the plane for Euro 2024 after scoring on his full England debut at Wembley on Tuesday night.

The 28-year-old striker became the first Brentford player to score for the Three Lions when he scored from the penalty spot in the 17th minute, cancelling out Youri Tielemans’ opener.

The former Leicester City midfielder put the visitors back in front before the interval, but Jude Bellingham scored a last minute equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw.

“Very special to get on the scoresheet,” Toney told Sky Sports News. “We would’ve gone in on a little downer if we had lost the game but thankfully Jude got the goal and I felt we deserved something.

“You always have to stay calm from the penalty spot, you see the goalkeeper trying to put you off but I waited.”

Toney replaced Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins in the starting lineup to make his first ever start for England in what was his last chance to impress Gareth Southgate up close before this summer’s tournament in Germany.

Both players are effectively battling each other for the chance to be the main understudy to Harry Kane, who was unable to play due to an ankle injury and returned to Germany.

“I hope I did and I’m always trying to work hard,” he said. “I support Ollie, it is friendly competition and I wish him all the best when he goes on the pitch. Hopefully I did well today and gave myself a chance to put myself forward for the Euros.

“When you have class players around you it is easier. It’s a joy to play with these players and hopefully I can play with them a lot more.”
