The New England Revolution exercised the permanent transfer option on forward Tomas Chancalay, making the player an official Designated Player through the 2026 Major League Soccer season.
Chancalay also holds an additional option for 2027 in his contract.
"Tomas performed admirably in his first season in New England and possesses both the natural attacking instincts and technical prowess to be an elite attacking talent in our league," Revolution interim sporting director Curt Onalfo said in a release.
"Based on his productivity and performance during his first season with the Revolution, it was a straightforward decision to extend his time in New England. We look forward to watching Tomas continue to flourish with the Revolution in the years ahead."
The player originally arrived to New England on loan in July from Racing Club in Argentina, and made an immediate impact. He managed six goals in 11 games to finish among the team’s top-five scorers for the 2023 regular season.
Chancalay will now be expected to be an even bigger role on the team, alongside fellow Desiganted Players Carles Gil and Giacomo Vrioni. The future of former DP and veteran forward Gustavo Bou remains unclear.
Heading into the offseason, the Revolution have several questions to answer. The club must look for a new head coach to kick off the post-Bruce Arena era in 2024, and sort out roster decisions.
After a fifth place finish in the Eastern Conference table and just one playoff appearance in 2023, the expectations remain high.
