Timo Werner’s stats show he’s been important – despite terrible finishing

If you’d told Timo Werner when he signed for Chelsea last summer that he was going to go on a meme-worth goal drought in his first season, he would have been pretty disappointed.
If you’d told him he’d be the team’s top combined scorer and assister at the end of April, he’d have been pretty delighted.
If you’d told him that both would be true at the same time… well, we’re not quite sure what he’d have thought.
There’s no doubting he’s not done as well as he could have done in front of goal this season. On the other hand, his effort today puts him at 20 goals and assists for the season – more than anyone else in the squad.
If he keeps it up, he will end the season as both our most productive attacking player; and as the most-mocked by opposition fans.
Football – it really is a funny old game sometimes.
