Timo Werner unhappy with being Chelsea’s only bright spot

Timo Werner’s return to form has been a rare bright spot in an up and down few weeks for Chelsea.

A big win against Southampton and a cup semi final dismissal of Crystal Palace have been overshadowed by the pain of elimination against Real Madrid in the Champions League, plus heavy defeats to Brentford and now Arsenal.

Werner’s improving form has been the one constant through that inconsistency. But according to the forward himself, it’s not much of a consolation if the team isn’t doing well:

“Of course when you score it’s not bad, but it’s a team sport and you want to win so my goal doesn’t make me happy,” the forward responded in quotes picked up by Chelsea’s official site when asked whether he was happy to make his mark against Arsenal despite the bad final result.

“We twice came back. At the end of the first half and start of the second half we played good football, we were closer to going 3-2 up than Arsenal, but for all the goals we made too many mistakes and against a team like Arsenal you can get into a lot of problems,” the Germany striker continued.

“When we tried to build up from behind, it was not our best game. Arsenal had a lot of players in our half, they were very dangerous and we also made a lot of mistakes. That’s why we lost.”

It’s a pretty accurate assessment of the game, which it never felt like Chelsea were going to lose, even once they had gone behind twice. Arsenal are just vulnerable, and it always felt like it was horrible mistakes letting Thomas Tuchel’s team down.

It was – but sadly they kept making those mistakes. And even as Chelsea pressed to make it 3-2 and lead for the first time in the game, that same complacency hurt them again, and they were stung to make it 3-2.

The less said about the fourth goal, the better.
