Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has detailed what went wrong in Spurs’ damning 4-1 defeat against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Antonio Conte’s side took the lead inside the first quarter of an hour through Rodrigo Bentancur yet struggled to gain a foothold in the game.

Nampalys Mendy levelled matters with an unstoppable long-range effort before James Maddison and Kelechi Iheanacho rounded off a near-perfect first half for the Foxes.

Tottenham, who were two goals down heading into the second period, then lost Bentancur with a knee injury in the 65th minute.

Harvey Barnes, who had earlier seen a goal disallowed by VAR, got in on the act and sealed the win for Leicester with nine minutes remaining.

Sherwood, who watched his former side humiliated at the King Power, analysed what went wrong.

“[Harvey] Barnes was causing them so many problems down the left-hand side,” Sherwood said (via Football Daily).

“Pedro Porro, who’s having his debut, probably one of the worst debuts I’ve ever seen. He was out of position so many times, so they need to address that.

“He’s [Conte] tried to put Richarlison on to try and shake things up. Harry Kane had his first shot at goal after like 88th minute – they couldn’t get him the football.

“Bentancur, who was their best player, he comes off with what looks like a nasty knee injury. They get beat 4-1 – it was a capitulation.

“When they [Leicester] scored the third one, they [Spurs] never looked like they were gonna get back into contention.”

Brendan Rodgers’ side have put some daylight between themselves and the relegation zone as they sit in 13th place, six points above 18th-placed Everton, after their outstanding victory.

Spurs have slipped further away from the top four with yet another defeat. The inconsistent Lilywhites have now lost three of their last five league games.

They sit fifth in the table, two points behind Newcastle United, having played one game more, and four ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion, who have two games in hand.

Conte’s side will now have to turn their attention to the Champions League with a trip to reigning Serie A champions AC Milan on Tuesday night.
