Thomas Frank teased that Xavi Simons is close to completing his transfer to Spurs and it could be announced as soon as Friday evening.
The Netherlands international has completed his medical at the club after RB Leipzig agreed to sell him to Tottenham Hotspur for almost £52 million (€60m).
Chelsea had been chasing a deal for Simons for most of the summer, but the attacking midfielder will instead sign a seven-year contract with the Lilywhites.
The transfer has not yet been formally announced, even though Frank‘s press conference was delayed by an hour with no official reason given.
The Spurs boss said he hopes that the supporters will receive “good news” by the end of Friday, although he refrained from going into specifics.
“I can confirm we’re working very hard to get someone over the line,” Frank said when asked whether Simons had been the reason behind the reschedule.
“That I can confirm, but right now I am happy to speak more about Djed Spence and other players in the squad!”
When further pressed on whether fans could receive some good news by the start of the weekend, he added: “I hope the fans get good news later today for various reasons. We’re trying to sign players, and that we will try to do until the end of the window.”
Simons’ arrival will be a major boost to Spurs after they missed out on Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze, who joined north London rivals Arsenal from Crystal Palace.
The 22-year-old will be the fourth new signing at Tottenham following Joao Palhinha, Mohammed Kudus and Luka Vuskovic, who has been sent on loan to Hamburger SV. Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso also signed on a permanent basis following loan spells last season.
