Robbie Fowler has come out to defend Brentford striker Ivan Toney.
Some Bees fans are getting frustrated by how openly Toney is pushing for a move away from the club, despite the fact that they’ve “stood by him” through his ban.
Of course, as Fowler points out, they were hardly going to sack a player worth at least £60m.
The former Liverpool striker also sympathises with Toney’s desire to move to a bigger club.
“Don’t get carried away about Toney being ungrateful or greedy, or whatever else he’s being accused of. He’s a 27 year old who’s played quite a large part of his career outside the top level, someone who’s done his hard yards with the likes of Wigan, Shrewsbury and Scunthorpe.
“This is his chance to go to a top club and play the best years of his career at the very top level. I can’t blame him for that – though again, his timing is senseless, and there are better ways of doing it.”
Chelsea fans are increasingly excited about the prospect of signing Toney, and the more we struggle to score goals the more tempting his arrival in January becomes.
Arsenal’s issues up front aren’t getting any better either, and it looks like we could face a genuinely shootout with the Gunners for Toney’s services, especially if they’re in the race for the title and feel that an injection of goals in January might be what helps get them over the line.
