Stade Rennais came agonisingly close to clinching all three points at the Parc des Princes as they entered stoppage time with a 1-0 lead from a spectacular effort from Amine Gouiri (24).

Gouiri had danced past the Paris Saint-Germain backline before a scooped shot opened the scoring in the first half. However, Rennes were denied a satisfying victory away to the league leaders when the referee awarded a late-stoppage time penalty to Gonçalo Ramos (22).

The forward had previously been booked a few minutes earlier when a penalty was overturned as VAR caught him diving to trick the referee, but there was to be no second reprieve for Rennes.

Rennes aggrieved by penalty call

Steve Mandanda (38) was adjudged to have brought down Ramos and the forward settled the game with his spot-kick. A decision that the goalkeeper believes was a harsh interpretation of what happened, “Ramos played it well, when we look at the penalty, we can see that he’s falling before he makes contact with me.”

Whilst the Rennes manager, Julien Stéphan, suggested that it was a penalty that in most other games probably would not have been awarded. “These are penalties for big teams, which are given only in certain stadiums.”
