Southampton head coach Marieanne Spacey-Cale issued a reminder that the season is not yet over following her side’s 3-1 victory over London City Lionesses at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Saints got their third consecutive home win thanks to goals from Molly Pike, Emma Thompson and Rianna Dean. It was the club’s last game of the season at St Mary’s Stadium with Southampton being on the road on the final day.

When speaking to WSL Full-Time after her side’s victory, Southampton boss Spacey-Cale highlighted the competitiveness of the Barclays Women’s Championship this season. She also said that while she was pleased with the performance against London City Lionesses, the campaign isn’t over for her side just yet.

“I think this [season] has been really exciting for the neutral but when you’re in it, you know that you’ve got to bring your highest standards every game,” Spacey-Cale said.

“It’s been a really competitive league so far and with one game to go, there’s so much still to play for. I think what’s important for us is that we don’t see today as the final curtain, we’ve got next week and we must try and perform at a level that gets us to the highest league position.

“The whole squad, not just those players on the pitch, but everyone off the pitch as well, worked hard to get us that result today and there’s one more game to go.”

A crowd of 3,416 were at St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton’s highest league attendance of the season. Spacey-Cale paid tribute to the fans for their support.

She said “It was a fantastic crowd today. We’re really proud of our supporters, they turn up week in, week out, whether that’s at home or away. We are pleased that we could sign off at home with a win.”

Spacey-Cale emphasised the importance of Southampton finishing the season off well. The Saints have a chance of ending the campaign as high as second, depending on results on the final day.

She said “You play to get better and I think if we can finish higher than we did last season, then we have progressed.

“We don’t want to sort of sit back and go ‘let’s look ahead to next season now’ because we have got a big game next week and there’s still so much in the league that could change. For the moment, we’ll enjoy today, concentrate on Charlton and then we will reflect on the season as a staffing group and a playing group.”

Southampton’s final Barclays Women’s Championship fixture of the season against Charlton Athletic takes place on Sunday afternoon.
